Rolls, The (DVD)

This delightful story of a Rolls Royce as it passes through various owners from the '40s to the '90s combines highly erotic footage with a sense of time and place that is rarely found in adult features.

The opening sequence, in which two American tourists are entrapped by two Nazi soldiers in Germany, makes a strong beginning, and the two concluding episodes, unified by Burrill's performance first as a would-be and then as a successful rock star, are almost a mini-feature in their own right. Burrill handles dialogue well and gives a lively performance as the lead singer in a band called Nude Kids on the Block.

The weak link in Allen's vision is the second scene, which supposedly takes place in Virginia in 1959. But Peterson's solo lacks the sense of setting that heightens both the dramatic effect and the sexual intensity of the other scenes; he could just as well be anywhere else at almost any other time. Allen wisely sandwiches this episode between the stronger ones, where it does the least damage to the feature's integrity.

All in all, this is a fine production, far above today's standard fare.
